Case study
HelloSupermarket
Shoppers add the groceries they usually buy, and HelloSupermarket shows what that basket costs at Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Ocado, Aldi and Iceland, so they can shop where it's cheapest.

What it does
- One basket priced at seven supermarkets, with the cheapest for everything shown first
- Items a supermarket doesn't sell are marked, with Aldi and Iceland stand-ins suggested as "Similar"
- Every price shows the date it was last seen, and old prices are flagged
- Prices per unit, such as per 100g, for fair comparisons
In October 2026 we relaunched it on Cloudflare, moving it off AWS and its DynamoDB database.
How it fits together
-
People
- Shoppers on web and phone
-
App
- Next.js on Cloudflare Workers (OpenNext)
- Pages cached at the edge
-
Data
- D1: products, prices and similar products
-
Behind the scenes
- Prices collected from supermarket websites
- AI matching for Aldi and Iceland stand-ins
How it's built
- Next.js and React on Cloudflare Workers through OpenNext, with pages cached at Cloudflare's edge.
- Products and prices in a D1 database, loaded from an export of the old DynamoDB table by a script that cleans each item and writes the SQL to import.
- A matching job finds stand-ins at Aldi and Iceland: it shortlists the eight most similar products by name, pack size and category, and asks an AI model which one a shopper would buy instead. Only matches with at least 70% confidence are shown.
- AI training crawlers are turned away at Cloudflare's edge.
